This is how they used to commercially catch Albacore in the 50's and earlier. The boat would have a narrow platform, both port and starboard, and 10 to 15 guys on each side with nothing but a stout bamboo pole and a bare hook and they would flip the fish over their shoulders. Fish after fish after fish. Their feet would be awash. They would heave the fish over their shoulders.

I used to fish that way. Also Harpooned Swordfish. Most Swordfish I have seen in one spot was 4 miles from Noyo Harbor on a meatball of bait and 40 lb Albacore mixed in the feeding freenzy. We called in a friend who had a Harpoon and he stuck one fish gourging on on bait. It dressed out at 400 + . We were bait fishing Albacore and had no Harppon or plank. We also got 4 Dorado that day at 20lbs each on a stop. 125 tons that season baitfishing. 2000 a ton. All 30 lb fish that year and up. Had 8 boatlines ripped off by Big eye and very large Albacore. 3 fish over 60 lbs.Still have my Lift pole and pads. LOL

What year was that?

Also, if the fish are hooked, how do they get unhooked by lifting them onboard over the shoulder?

Somewhere I have a couple pics of the chicken jigs. Or if you watch the video I posted, right before the end (9:36)when they are puting the poles away they show one.

It looks like a bent nail with some white chicken feathers tied on it......... totally barbless & falls out when the pressure is released.

Love the video's makes me remember the 40's and 50's when we use to take tuna on the bambo between catalina and the main land. I can remember when guy's got so tired from catching tuna they laid down their bambo and said-- LETS GO HOME I'M TIRED.

If you wern't there you won't know what you missed
